Your Visit

Your Patient Journey at Tokoroa Hospital

Understanding what to expect can make your experience smoother and less stressful. Here's a typical pathway:

1. Before You Arrive

For planned care (e.g., clinic appointment, birthing discussion, or fracture follow-up): Your GP or midwife refers you and provides instructions. Bring your NHI number, ID, and any referral letters.

For emergencies: Come straight to our ED or call 111. If unsure, ring Healthline first on 0800 611 116.

2. Arrival & Check-In

Emergency Department: Enter via Gate 1 on Maraetai Road (clear signage & drop-off bay). A triage nurse assesses urgency quickly.

Planned Visits/Outpatients: Park at Gate 3 and follow signs to the relevant clinic or GP practice.

3. During Your Visit

You'll be seen by nurses, doctors, midwives, or allied health staff. Tests (bloods, X-rays) may be arranged on site.

For maternity: Midwives provide personalised support in our comfortable birthing suite.

We encourage whānau support — nominate a key person to stay with you.

4. Treatment & Decision-Making

Most care is provided locally. If you need specialist surgery, ICU-level care, or advanced diagnostics, we arrange swift transfer to Waikato Hospital via ambulance/helicopter.

Once stable, many patients return to Tokoroa for continued recovery (repatriation) — keeping you closer to family.

5. Discharge & Follow-Up

We plan your discharge carefully, with medications, instructions, and any follow-up appointments.

Community services (GP, physio, mental health) help support your recovery at home.

We aim to make every step clear, respectful, and whānau-centred.
